Wednesday, September 13, 2017 Day 5

Homeroom:

  • WIN will be with the one teacher remaining you have not seen yet.

  • Bus Evacuation Today

Grade 8 Agenda:

Homework:

Mapping a Magnetic Field

SLANT: WHAT IS A FIELD?

  • a region of space influenced by the effects of gravity, magnetism, or electric charges

  • Magnetic fields affect certain metals.

  • A compass is designed to orient itself to a magnetic field whenever one is present.

  • Using a compass, you can "see" and draw the field surrounding a magnet.

Lab Procedure:

  1. You will be grouped into a team and given a sheet of paper, a worksheet, a compass, and magnet.  You will need a pencil.

  2. Make predictions on your worksheet as instructed.

  3. Place the magnet in the center of the paper as shown.  Trace around it so if it is moved accidentally you can return it to its correct spot.

  4. Draw a dot somewhere near the magnet and place the center of a compass over the dot.

  5. Draw a dot at the location of the arrow head (or tail) of the compass needle.

  6. Move the compass center to this new dot, and again draw a dot at the location of the compass needle head (or tail).

  7. Remove the compass from the paper and draw lines connecting the dots.

  8. Draw arrowheads on the line pointing the same direction as the red arrow on the compass did while you were drawing the dots.

  9. Repeat this on both sides of the magnet at different distances from its edge.

  10. Complete your worksheet.
